What's up plant lovers and sometimes killers? We hope you enjoyed our last post about hard to murder plants! We took a quick dip in the sea of easy to care for plants and in this post, we're going to take it a step further and talk about WHY you want plants in your home to begin with. Let us dive right in, shall we?
1. Beauty.
This is a no-brainer. Plants are gorgeous and along with their beauty, they add texture, warmth, personality, FUN, and PATTERN. Y'all know we love pattern and plants so when those two loves collide- we get a little cray cray in a good way. Behold:
I love the pattern of the baskets with the pattern of that snake plant and the striking markings on the Elephant Ear plant. Can we also talk about the texture of the pressed tins in the background?
2. They purify the air in your home.
This is another no-brainer. We all know that the air we breathe is paramount to our personal health and wellbeing. We also know that we can bring in untold numbers of toxic chemicals into our homes without realizing it. Rugs, paint, cleaning agents, and furniture can all contain off-gassing toxins we don't want in our lungs.
You probably know that plants convert carbon dioxide into oxygen; plants in your home are no exception. Oxygen affects every part of your body and mind and making sure you get quality air is essential to your well-being.
Did you know NASA uses plants on the International Space Station to help with air quality? Certain species purify the air of toxins like benzene, formaldehyde, and more. In order to do this efficiently, the researchers at NASA recommend at least one plant per 100 square feet of home or office space.
3. They help you work better.
Whaaaat? I KNOW! A number of studies reveal that working or studying in the presence of plants can have a very positive effect. Just like being in nature, being around plants improves memory, concentration, and productivity. Being near plants can increase memory retention up to 20 percent, according to a University of Michigan study. I wonder if this is why I remember what happened on my reality TV binges (my living room is FULL of plants) and not what I wrote on this here blog? I need MORE PLANTS in my office! Yay! More reasons to feed the plant addict in me.
4. They help avoid illness.
Plant roots tap the water for the plant's survival. That water then evaporates through its leaves in a process known as transpiration. Transpiration creates humidity in the air in your home. While this may sound unappealing during hot moist months, it’s a gift during drier months or if you live in more desert-like environments. Research reveals that higher absolute humidity is conducive to decreased survival and transmission of the flu virus! After this season of the flu, let us all get some plant-love on in our homes, shall we?
